About St. Barth Properties

St. Barth Properties is a boutique travel company specializing in vacations to St. Barth, French West Indies. The company has a portfolio of more than 190 carefully selected private villas and a branded collection of the island’s most distinctive hotels. In addition, it provides a full range of concierge services. Founded in 1989 with the maxim Live Your Dream®, the company and its service-oriented staff leverage their combined expertise and passion for the destination to deliver a Dream Vacation. Headquartered in the United States, the company maintains a fully staffed office on the harbor in St. Barth.

St. Barth Properties History

St. Barth Properties was founded by American Peg Walsh, an inveterate traveler who delighted in planning vacations for family and friends. She frequently vacationed in the Caribbean, visiting many of the islands over the years. In 1986 she arrived in St. Barth, and it was love at first sight. One could say she never really left.

She bought a little bit of her newfound paradise – a small pied-à-terre in St. Jean – listed it with a local rental company but ultimately was disappointed in the lack of results. She decided simply to market the property herself. Voilà! In 1989, Peg coined and trademarked the company motto, Live Your Dream®, and St. Barth Properties (SBP) was officially born, representing a small group of carefully selected private villas.

In 1992, Peg’s son Tom Smyth, now SBP’s vice president, joined the business. He shared Peg’s passion for St. Barth and had a keen interest in the then-new concept of e-commerce. The business grew exponentially from that point.

Building on Peg’s relationships, SBP began representing a collection of the island’s finest hotels and Tom ventured successfully into real estate sales, a natural next step for SBP. In 1999, the office in St. Barth was opened and staffed, thus ensuring full service from the planning stage to the realization of each client’s Dream Vacation and, for some, villa ownership.

In 2006, under the direction of Tom Smyth, SBP’s on-island affiliate office became St. Barth Properties Sotheby’s International Realty. The company has since been recognized by the Sotheby’s International Realty® for having one of the top 10 sales in its worldwide network numerous times.

Kudos for the company come from Frommer's and Fodor's, combined with exposure in top travel magazines like Travel + Leisure and Caribbean Travel & Life as well as a feature on the affordability of villas in the Smart Money section of The Wall Street Journal.

St. Barth Properties Today

St. Barth Properties is an island fixture serving a growing international clientele. In addition to designing and delivering its signature Dream Vacations with premium accommodations in the island’s villas and hotels, SBP assists clients in the planning of destination weddings and special events. The 2010-2011 season saw the launch of a new branded collection of higher-end villas. The Grand Cru collection offers vacationers additional amenities, continental breakfast and turndown service. New this year is the addition of our Hotel Villas collection, geared to vacationers who love the idea of staying in a villa but prefer the added services that hotels offer.

St. Barth Properties is a partner in the prestigious Virtuoso network (an international consortium of high-end travel agencies) and a member of the St. Barth Hotel Association, the Caribbean Hotel Association, the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the International Airlines Travel Agent Network (IATAN). The company is also an allied member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), as well as a member of the Better Business Bureau.

Meet the Team

SBP’s U.S.-based team is a unique group of professionals who share a passion for St. Barth and a commitment to delivering a special St. Barth-style experience to each and every one of the company's clients.

You need experience to create an experience, and our trio of St. Barth experts boasts a combined 35-plus years of creating Dream Vacations. A call to our office will put you in the capable hands of Anne-Cécile Bedford, Julie Nally or Kathy Schlitzer. Each has been with the company for over a decade and makes at least two trips per year to St. Barth. Suffice it to say, they know the island well or, as we like to say, like the French know Champagne.

They can advise you not just if a villa or a hotel will suit you best but which villa or hotel. They have a wealth of information and suggestions of how to enhance your experience. They are backed up by concierge extraordinaire Julia Hurd and her island counterpart, Magdalena Votava.

Peg Walsh Tom SmythPeg Walsh
Founder & President
Peg Walsh, founder and president of St. Barth Properties, made her first visit to the island in 1986, and that ignited a passion that later led her to found the company in 1989 around the mantra of Live Your Dream®. Today the company, which represents many of the island’s finest private villas and hotels, continues to grow, as does its clientele.

Peg has been honored by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the top villa specialists worldwide and the best for St. Barth, and she has received this distinction each year since the award’s inception in 2006.

Currently, Peg spends six months a year on St. Barth with her husband, Steve. Late spring through fall, she is based out of her home on Cape Cod and makes frequent trips back to the island and to the company’s Franklin, MA, headquarters.

Her days on the island, which begin with a power walk, are spent doing villa and hotel site inspections and helping to make sure the island office runs smoothly. She happily admits to stimulating the island’s economy by shopping the boutiques and loves dining out in the island’s restaurants. She chronicles it all in her blog – complete with pictures – and this season she plans to start Tweeting about her days in paradise. Her two favorite beaches are Lorient and St. Jean, where you can find her – and Steve – on Sunday afternoons.

Tom Smyth
Vice President
Tom began vacationing in St. Barth when he was just a teenager. After graduating from college in 1992, he joined the family business. Tom has been instrumental in the company’s strategic growth including the launch of a branded hotel collection – the Hotels of St. Barth – and the affiliation of its real estate division with prestigious Sotheby’s International Realty, in 2006. He is now both co-owner and vice president. Listed in the Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate, Tom has been quoted in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal on the island’s villa market.

Tom now has two teenage boys of his own, so the family tradition of St. Barth vacations continues. Together they enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving, and they have a ball renting Jet Skis. The boys are becoming fans of French food but can also tell you where to get the best pizza on the island. Tom and his wife, Amy, enjoy both the St. Barth lunch scene and dinner at the romantic seaside restaurants.

Toni LarongaToni Laronga
Executive Assistant (since 2006)
Toni’s role is that of Executive Assistant to President Peg Walsh and Vice President Tom Smyth. She is the hands-on person for daily operations, liaises between the U.S. and island offices and is the company go-to person for a lengthy list of functions including IT. She’s a self-proclaimed computer geek, and everyone is glad of it. On her business-focused trips to the island, Toni can usually be coaxed into fitting in a bit of fun and relaxation, including pool time at the villa, sunset libations and some special dinners.

Julie NallyJulie Nally
St. Barth Villa and Hotel Specialist (since 1997)
With over 30 visits to St. Barth to her credit, Julie knows its beaches! Her personal favorite is the more secluded Gouverneur, and she’s an expert on which boulangeries and restaurants offer the best to-go options for beach picnics. She enjoys the island’s maritime traditions and will join the spectators for the November Cata Cup Regatta when she is on the island. Julie plans her post-season inspection trip around her May birthday, and she celebrates with a late-night dinner at one of the island’s fabulous restaurants. And then she indulges in some St. Barth-style nightlife. You’ll have to ask her yourself whether she has danced on any tabletops.

Anne-Cecile BedfordAnne-Cécile Bedford
Bilingual St. Barth Villa and Hotel Specialist (since 1999)
Born in France’s region of Brittany, Anne-Cécile revels in that “French Connection” when she visits St. Barth. She loves shopping the boutiques’ sales for the latest European and island fashions – especially for her two children – and discovering local artists in the galleries. You can usually count on her to come home with a unique piece of jewelry. Come early evening, you may find her observing the island tradition of sunset cocktails at Shell Beach with a Ti-Punch. Anne runs in the annual 10K race, the Gustavialoppet (Race of Gustavia), and plans her November inspection trip around the event. It’s a highlight for her and now one of her personal traditions.

Kathy SchlitzerKathy Schlitzer
St. Barth Villa and Hotel Specialist (since 2000)
Kathy not only makes biannual inspection trips to St. Barth but also frequently vacations there. Touching down onto that notorious little runway gives her a feeling of coming home. She treasures her relationships with her St. Barth colleagues and friends as well as the nods and smiles of locals who now recognize her. Kathy tries to fit in a hike when she is on the island and loves to take to the seas. She says that one of her favorite experiences is “flying by catamaran to Colombier and having the spray soak me. I laugh for the sheer joy of it!”

Julia HurdJulia Hurd
Concierge, U.S. Office (since 2007)
On any given day Julia is happily securing reservations at the island’s most coveted restaurants, booking spa treatments and arranging for VIP service. She needs to know who’s who on the island – and she does. Her island visits provide her with the opportunity to meet face-to-face with all the vendors whom she works with, and because she is a real people person, she loves those interactions! She also loves visiting the island’s beaches, snorkeling on day excursions, trying out new restaurants and keeping abreast of the island’s entertainment. It’s all in a day’s work.

Connie WalshConnie Walsh
Marketing and Travel Industry Consultant (since 2005)
Connie manages many of SBP’s marketing initiatives and communications with our clients and travel agent partners. She writes the content for our website, monthly newsletter and Live Your Dream® – so we are happy that she is passionate about St. Barth! A foodie and a spa aficionado who is also crazy for beaches, she says, “What’s not to love?” Connie is the first one to volunteer to take a test trip to a spa and enjoys swimming at Flamands Beach. One of her favorite island experiences was a recent excursion to Pinel Island on a gorgeous yacht, with Champagne post-snorkeling and a “feet in the sand” lunch.
