Le Bulletin - August 2013
August on St. Barth can be a calm and quiet retreat with just the sounds of the surf, rustling palm fronds and sighs of contentment, or it can totally rock out. The fifth annual Summer Sessions, 13 days (August 3-15) and 40 concerts at venues throughout the island, finished up to rave reviews and growing international recognition. St. Barth Rocks? You bet! Watch for next year’s dates and maybe mix and match some music with some quiet time. That’s the best of both worlds.
We are experiencing busy days as we get ready to launch the season, and we are already fielding requests for the holidays. We encourage you to book early for the best selection. Check out the availability now posted on our website. See below to learn what villas our Villa Specialists recommend. Come early and do your duty-free shopping on the island. We have some great suggestions for you from travel writer, author and St. Barth devotee Baroness Sheri de Borchgrave.
I hope to see you on the island!

Villas of St. Barth
Villa Specialists Kathy Schlitzer and Julie Nally have some jolly good suggestions for holiday bookings.
Kathy recommends a villa stay with some bragging rights – Villa Au Soleil – the luxurious vacation home of comedian Steve Martin. This gorgeous 4 bedroom villa boasts a spectacular 180-degree view of St. Jean Bay and an eye-popping two-tiered infinity edge pool. Au Soleil is part of our exclusive Grand Cru collection whose villas include a French-style continental breakfast delivered each morning and turn-down service. The villa’s manager, also an accomplished chef, resides nearby and is available to prepare and serve meals upon request. How does chilled pea soup and grilled (fresh & local) mahi-mahi with fruit salsa sound? Yum!
Looking for a romantic rendezvous over the holidays? Julie says take a look at Villa Blue Diamond. Its en suite bedroom is housed in a separate pavilion facing the sea, and the main house includes a kitchen and spacious indoor living and dining areas and a delightful pool deck. Equipped for Ligne St. Barth, spa services are offered at special prices. Think couple’s massage. If you are looking to celebrate with your whole gang, Julie has just the spot to do it.
Hotels of St. Barth
Congratulations to the Hotel Guanahani & Spa on its brand-new (shining) 5-star rating. Well deserved. The 5-star Le Sereno has announced the appointment of new general manager Samy Gachem. He has nearly 20 years of robust travel industry experience including a stint with Air France and most recently as managing director of FROSCH-NY, a renowned travel management company. Welcome, Samy!
It is with great sadness that we report that the Hotel Carl Gustaf will close on August 31 and will not reopen for the upcoming season. It has been our pleasure to work with this valued hotel partner for many years. We will provide an update on the property as soon as we have more news.
Our duty-free shopping is a favorite pastime of island visitors year-round, but since we are thinking ahead to the holiday season shopping, we thought we’d share the Baroness Sheri de Borchgrave faves as listed in her blog Liquid Liaisons.
THE BARONESS GETS THE GOODS:
In St. Jean
La Casa del Habano is a fine cigar and Panama hat shop with 95 percent of its cigars from Cuba.
Couleurs Provence has items from Provence, including the famous blue and yellow table linens and beach bags, plus Laguiole knife sets, Versace collection tea sets, crystal caviar bowls and more.
Mademoiselle Hortense has romantic dresses made on the island from Liberty of London lacy cotton or silk fabrics.
Le Comptoir du Cigare is a gaming and cigar shop with a huge walk-in humidor stocked with only Cuban cigars plus a full line of handcrafted game sets and boards and French Laguiole knives.
St. Barth’s French West Indies features a hip, contemporary island brand of loungewear: soft jersey T-shirts, hats, sarongs, towels, bathrobes and dresses, plus colorful woven vanity pillows.
Ligne St. Barth is a delightful shop with local natural beauty products in Caribbean scents of vanilla, frangipani, coconut, banana and papaya.
Our Villa and Hotel Specialist Anne Cecile Bedford recently stayed at the Christopher and has kudos for the Brazilian culinary experience offered Tuesday nights at its Taïno restaurant. Why so fab? Credit new chef Lucas Leonardi who hails from Brazil. If you are in Gustavia and looking for a light lunch, Anne recommends L’Isoletta – Italian eatery L’Isola’s little sister – for the “best pizza on St. Barth” and a nice selection of salads.

(Restaurant) La Langouste stands out for me personally not just because the lobster was excellent but because the waiter suggested we split one due to the size. He got it out of the tank and brought it over; it was huge. They were friendly, honest and have a good business ethic.

Loved the steady breezes in Vitet and decided to make it our preferred location...villa prices are moderate, the villas are simple but comfortable. It doesn't take long to get to Lurin, Saline, Gouverneur, and we can swing by the minimart in Lorient on the way to and from the beach each day.
