Le Bulletin February 2020

Villa Polaris

Bonjour from St. Barth, where the season is in full swing and on Tuesday we celebrated Carnival with quite a parade and lots of fun! I’ve been busy inspecting lots of fabulous villas for your next stay but as always enjoying all that the island offers.

We’ve welcomed quite a few guests visiting for the first time (and they tell us they’ll be back), and many more for their first post-Irma visit. They share with us how thrilled they are, from the first sighting of the iconic red-roofed villas as they swoop in to those oh-so-precious beach days and the chance to dine again in their favorite restaurants – and, of course, to discover what’s new.

My husband and I spent the past several weeks in the little beachfront Villa Polaris on Flamands, and we loved it. For many years, we were in Vitet (where the views are amazing), and then we enjoyed a few seasons in the Suite Harbour, an apartment overlooking the harbor in the heart of Gustavia. We loved that, too, especially as we could walk to so many restaurants (including some of our favorites, like L’Isola and Black Ginger) – and stroll home.

Our stay in Flamands delivered a wealth of different experiences, including the magical sound of the surf and morning beach walks. One morning, I walked back along the road and stopped in at Chez Rolande, a little eatery that is popular with locals. I had driven by it countless times but had never tried it. I returned for lunch and found they served one of my favorite dishes, christophine – a type of baked squash – yummy! It was a delightful, authentic experience and we’ll be back.

On the other end of the spectrum, proximity to the 5 star Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France made it easy to pop over for a drink. We’re happy to report the Tuesday evening fashion show is back, now at the newly opened and renovated space that was formerly the Taïwana Hotel.

All of St. Barth’s areas and villages have their own special charms. I’m often asked, “Where should we stay?” My first recommendation is to find a villa you love that has most of your wish list features (a stunning view, sunsets, a wow pool, a media or fitness room…) and then consider the area; for example, do you want to be close to the “action” that Gustavia or St. Jean offers, or do you want to cocoon in a more secluded location like Le Toiny? I hope to see you on the island.

Villas of St. Barth

We’re pleased to welcome Villa Golden Palm and Villa La Montagne to our portfolio.

Villa Golden Palm

Villa Golden Palm
Luxurious Villa Golden Palm sits on one of St. Jean’s iconic hills above Nikki Beach, and its view is as stunning as the villa itself. And with 5 bedrooms, it’s a dream come true for a gathering of friends or an extended family to experience a St. Barth-style villa vacation. Its design and décor are contemporary, and Asian accessories add a touch of glam and whimsy. A Sonos sound system is available throughout. The open floor plan encompasses a living room, a dining area and a kitchen worthy of its own magazine layout. A pantry houses an extra fridge and the all-important wine cooler.

Villa Golden Palm living room

Floor-to-ceiling glass sliders frame the view of St. Jean Bay and provide access to the outdoor living spaces — a covered terrace furnished for relaxing and al fresco dining and an expansive pool deck that includes a Jacuzzi. Another set of sliders frames a rear garden and “brings the outdoors in.”

All 5 bedrooms have en suite baths. The three on the main level include two that connect via a short corridor and a master suite (French king bed) with an elegant soaking tub and private outdoor shower. The two lower-level bedrooms feature closets-cum-dressing rooms. The 4 guest bedrooms all have king beds, and all five bedrooms have U.S. satellite and Apple TV. Additional features include a glass-walled, air-conditioned Technogym-equipped fitness room that looks out to the sea. The proximity to the little village’s restaurants and boutiques is a vacation bonus.

Villa La Montagne

Villa La Montagne
This sweet and petite 2 bedroom villa comes with a big, sweeping view that encompasses neighboring islands and the aquamarine waters of Grand Cul de Sac. And it treats its guests to Instagram-worthy sunsets. All the “visuals” can be enjoyed from the well-laid-out deck that includes covered sitting and dining areas and chaise lounges positioned well for sun seekers. There’s a lovely little pool as well. Indoors, the décor is pretty and beachy-casual. The air-conditioned living room is nice for relaxing and watching TV (Apple TV), and the driftwood-toned kitchen is well-equipped for cooking in. The master bedroom (king) has an en suite bath, Apple TV and sliders to the deck. The guest (king) bedroom, also with Apple TV, has an adjacent bath. An easy-access driveway and ramp make coming and going a breeze.

Hotels of St. Barth

The island’s iconic Carl Gustaf Hotel, now officially known as Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf, is getting ready to reopen in exciting 5 star glory next month. Our team was recently treated to a hard-hat tour as construction neared completion. The relaunched hotel is the newest addition to the Barrière Group’s collection of luxury properties throughout mainland France, which adds a French twist to the property’s homage to the Swedish king. Accommodations include chicly decorated, luxurious rooms, Junior Suites, Suites and 1 and 2 bedroom Bungalows. There will be fine dining at Le Fouquet’s, and electric cars will be at the ready to bring guests to and from Shell Beach, where they’ll be treated to special perks at the hotel’s seaside Shellona Restaurant. And then there’s the Zen-like Spa Diane Barrière. Sound dreamy? We'd be happy to arrange your stay at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Restaurant News

Each season brings some new restaurants, and the Kinu Gawa St-Barth is generating quite a buzz. Our island team gives it high marks. The restaurant offers Japanese gastronomy, sushi and wow cocktails in a lovely setting. SBP president Peg Walsh recently dined there with her husband and reported back on their choices: “edamame with our cocktails, then tuna tataki, crab tempura and crispy shrimp pane – lightly breaded and crunchy. Everything was delicious.”

We’re ready for “The Bucket”! The St. Barth Bucket Regatta will be held March 19-22.

Parlez-vous français? If not, we have a suggestion for when you next visit St. Barth – a lesson at the recently opened Réussite Language School. Founder Pierre Geraud discovered he had an aptitude and love for languages as a child. He also fell in love with St. Barth, and when he decided to make his home here, he began teaching languages in the public schools, later offering private lessons for adults. This evolved into his opening Réussite and developing a variety of fun cultural courses that revolve around French wines and cheeses and include visiting patisseries, the vagaries of French restaurants and shopping. No conjugation of verbs required. Read more about it in Peg’s Blog; our concierge team will be happy to help arrange a lesson for you.

Client Accolade

We had an amazing time during our stay. St. Barth has returned to its full glory after the hurricane. Villa Kuban was perfect for my wife and I – spacious, comfortable and a great location.… Went exclusively to our favorite beach, Gouverneur, where we enjoyed gorgeous weather and calm seas.

Favorite restaurants: Orega (dined there twice) and Tamarin (delightful as usual). We celebrated both Sundays at Nikki Beach, which is not a bad way to spend them!
